This thesis addresses the theme Tourism and socio-spatial transformations, and the following research problem: the socio-spatial transformations of Boipeba, Cairu, Bahia, may be related to tourist activity started with the implementation of programs for tourism development by the state government of Bahia. Generating research questions were the following: The socio-spatial transformations of Boipeba are produced by the implementation of programs for tourism development in this location? Tourism development programs in Boipeba Island were implemented without the participation of the local population, leading to socio-spatial transformations? The lack of supervision and monitoring of the Management Plan of the APA and urban land use is responsible for urban sprawl Island and brings environmental problems? The Boipeba’s problems of environmental cause negative environmental impacts and lead to loss of biodiversity mangrove and cultural diversity of traditional populations that inhabit the island? The research had the following objectives: to explain whether the socio-spatial transformations that occur in Boipeba are caused by tourism development programs implemented; examine whether the lack of participation of local people in the implementation of development programs in tourism Boipeba cause socio-spatial transformations; understand whether there is a relationship between lack of supervision and monitoring of the management plan and the APA urban land use as the cause of the problems of socio-spatial Boipeba; understand how negative environmental impacts that occur in Boipeba determine the losses of mangrove biodiversity and cultural diversity of the traditional population that inhabits this island. We opted for qualitative research and the case study on the implementation of this study, using semi-structured interviews, field diary and informal conversation as instruments of data collection. The analysis of the survey data showed that the socio-spatial transformations of the island are related to tourism development programs “Caminhos da Bahia” (Paths of Bahia) and PRODETUR / NE I. These changes were responsible for the emergence of socio-spatial problems of the Island as urban sprawl, changes in the local landscape; emergence of slums; speculation and replacement of traditional crops by tourism. The results showed that there was no participation of local people in the implementation of these programs, a fact that, coupled with a lack of supervision and monitoring, led to the loss of biological diversity of mangroves and cultural diversity of the traditional population.
